We put the health, safety and security of our workforce, customers and communities at the center of everything we do.
We’re invested in being an industry leader and accomplish this by championing health, safety, and security programs that protect our people, projects and operations. We reinforce a safety-first culture for our employees and contractors and seek continuous improvement through measurement and learning from events and observations.
Employee Health & Safety
Employee Health & Safety
Safety is our top priority. We are only satisfied when each employee and contractor returns home safely after every workday.
Our commitment is reflected in the strong safety actions we have taken in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. At the onset of the pandemic, Sempra activated an enterprise-wide leadership team to share best practices and help our operating companies identify and mitigate risks. Because our operations were deemed essential by governmental authorities, we activated business continuity plans and safety protocols aimed at continuing to work and delivering energy safely.
In our safety-focused culture, safety is much more than a “check-the-box” exercise. Everyone feels responsible for their own safety as well as the safety of others. This allows and encourages colleagues to speak up.
Our commitment to safety also extends to our contractor and supplier workforce. Our Supplier Code of Conduct outlines our expectations that suppliers provide a safe working environment that supports accident prevention and minimizes exposure to health risks and are responsible for knowing and understanding the health and safety laws and regulations impacting the goods and services they provide.
In 2020, Sempra LNG achieved zero employee or contractor fatalities.
LNG is a safe and reliable way to transport energy.
At our facilities, sophisticated process safety engineering controls and multiple back-up safety systems, which include emergency shutdown (ESD) systems, are core components of our LNG facilities. ESD systems can identify problems and shut down operations, limiting the amount of LNG that could be released. These systems are linked to automatic gas, liquid and fire detection equipment. There are also detectors for monitoring LNG levels and vapor pressures within storage tanks and closed-circuit television equipment for monitoring all critical locations of the LNG facility. LNG terminal safety systems combined with special operating procedures, training and equipment maintenance minimizes the risk of an accident.
In addition, industry and government standards set specifications for, among other things, concrete and steel used in construction, valves, pumps, tanks, compressors, refrigeration piping, tank insulation, firefighting equipment and protection against seismic activity.
To help ensure the safety of all our people, sites and communities, an important component of Sempra LNG’s safety culture is process safety. Our robust and disciplined process safety management program focuses on the concerns of major hazards impacting safety, environmental damage and business losses.
We’ve developed plant safety systems and procedures to prevent unwanted releases that could result in a major incident. We meet or exceed all regulatory standards related to safety and we apply a disciplined framework of good design principles, engineering, and operating practices to manage the integrity of operating systems and processes handling hazardous substances.
At Sempra LNG, we participate in emergency planning processes in 100% of the communities where we operate. All critical employees are trained in emergency management and response. We have implemented an innovative safety software solution enabling the analysis of leading safety indicators and development of proactive incident prevention plans.
Our design standards for infrastructure resiliency were proven as Cameron LNG experienced two Category 4 hurricanes in 2020 with no injuries and minimal damage to the newly constructed liquefaction facilities. In addition, Cameron LNG works closely with its electricity supplier and the Calcasieu ship channel control authorities to further enhance the resilience of electric supply and facility access.
With a culture of learning and continuous improvement, we’ve implemented several enhanced approaches to emergency preparedness and response, including a two-way communication platform to confirm the wellbeing of employees and 24/7 surveillance for possible tropical storm development. We also conduct regular employee emergency preparedness drills at all of our facilities.
